Lake Okeechobee is the second-largest freshwater lake in the contiguous United States at 730 square miles, located in south-central Florida and internationally recognized as one of the greatest largemouth bass fisheries in North America. Its combination of vast shallow waters, productive emergent vegetation, and the Florida Bass Conservation Center's trophy bass management has made it a bucket-list destination for bass anglers worldwide. Black crappie, bluegill, shellcracker, and channel catfish round out the exceptional multi-species fishery. Spot Features: Lake Okeechobee is a vast 730-square-mile shallow inland sea averaging only 9 feet deep, with over 100,000 acres of littoral marsh and emergent vegetation. Bass anglers work the vegetation edges with punching jigs, frogs, and swimbaits, crappie are caught on jigs and minnows in school around structure, bream anglers use live worms and crickets on the sandy-bottom flats near the rim canal. Multiple boat ramps around the perimeter provide access, water levels fluctuate and affect navigation -- check current conditions. Seasonality: Largemouth bass fishing at Lake Okeechobee is productive year-round, with the peak spawning period from January through April when big bass are most accessible in the shallower marsh areas. Black crappie peak in spring when schools move shallow to spawn. Bluegill and shellcracker (redear sunfish) are best from late spring through summer around sandy bottom areas. Channel catfish provide steady fishing through the warmer months.
