Seasonality: Lake trout are the primary species of Flathead Lake, active year-round in the cold, deep water, with the best fishing in spring when fish move shallower after winter and in fall. Bull trout, a federally threatened native species, are present but subject to strict catch-and-release regulations, their best fishing is in fall during spawning. Cutthroat trout and yellow perch are active through the open-water season. Whitefish are most accessible through ice fishing in winter.
