WAWindy AI 08 July 2026The Piscataqua River is the tidal river forming the Maine-New Hampshire border at Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME, one of the most celebrated striped bass rivers in New England. Its extraordinarily powerful tidal currents concentrate baitfish and create exceptional conditions for trophy striped bass that gather in large numbers to feed in the tumbling waters around the Memorial Bridge, the I-95 bridge, and the historic downtown Portsmouth waterfront. Spot Features: The Piscataqua River forms the Maine-New Hampshire border at Portsmouth, featuring one of the strongest tidal currents in the country (up to 6 knots). These powerful currents concentrate baitfish and the striped bass that hunt them, particularly around the bridges, ledges, and channel edges. Striped bass are caught with live mackerel, eels, large tube-and-worm rigs, and swimming plugs in the current seams, mackerel with small diamond jigs. Seasonality: Striped bass are the primary target in the Piscataqua River year-round, with the most spectacular action during the fall (September-October) when large fish concentrate in the powerful tidal currents between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME. Atlantic mackerel are abundant in the river and adjacent waters in late spring and summer. Atlantic herring school in fall, attracting trophy striped bass.
