The pass hosts the famous World's Richest Tarpon Tournament and draws serious tarpon anglers from around the globe to witness and participate in one of the great spectacles of sportfishing. Spot Features: Boca Grande Pass is the deep natural tidal inlet at the south end of Gasparilla Island in Lee County, Florida, separating it from Cayo Costa and linking Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound to the Gulf of Mexico. The pass is exceptionally deep (40-80 feet) with powerful tidal currents that sweep crabs and baitfish through a narrow throat concentrating fish. Drifting live crabs or baits along the bottom on a moving tide is the classic tarpon approach, a boat is essential. Seasonality: Tarpon are the marquee species at Boca Grande Pass, building from late April through July during the peak spring migration before fish scatter north across Charlotte Harbor. Snook are year-round residents of the pass, most active in the warmer months. Spotted seatrout, permit, and cobia are warm-season species. The pass hosts the world's most famous tarpon fishery.
