Spot Features: Flathead Lake is a massive 185,000-acre natural glacial lake in Lake and Flathead counties, Montana, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. Lake trout are targeted by trolling deep-running lures and spoons at 60-150 feet, bull trout (catch-and-release only) are caught by trolling and jigging in the deeper sections, cutthroat trout near the lake surface and along tributary stream mouths, perch on small jigs and minnow rigs in fall. Seasonality: Lake trout are the primary species of Flathead Lake, active year-round in the cold, deep water, with the best fishing in spring when fish move shallower after winter and in fall. Bull trout, a federally threatened native species, are present but subject to strict catch-and-release regulations, their best fishing is in fall during spawning. Cutthroat trout and yellow perch are active through the open-water season. Whitefish are most accessible through ice fishing in winter.
