Chinook salmon run through the reservoir in fall, largemouth bass are caught in the vegetated coves with soft plastics and crankbaits, smallmouth bass along the rocky canyon walls with crankbaits and jigs, trout with trolling gear and standard spinning techniques. Seasonality: Rainbow trout are stocked in New Melones and provide good fishing from fall through spring. Chinook salmon run through the reservoir on their way to and from the Stanislaus River spawning grounds in fall (September-November). Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are active from spring through fall, peaking in spring during spawning. The Sierra Nevada foothill climate allows near year-round fishing.
