Spot Features: Moonstone is a rocky headland and beach on the Humboldt County coast, California, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean with kelp beds and rocky reef structure that hold lingcod, rockfish, and surf perch. Lingcod are targeted by casting or jigging from the rocks, rockfish are caught on jigs and live bait near the kelp, surf perch anglers wade the wave break with small jigs and sand crabs, salmon can be spotted feeding offshore in fall and targeted with lures and cut bait from kayaks or small boats. Seasonality: Chinook salmon can be caught at Moonstone Beach (Humboldt Bay area) in fall during their spawning run, typically August through November, as fish stage near the coast before entering the Eel and Mad rivers. Lingcod and rockfish are year-round targets from the rocky structure adjacent to the beach, with the best lingcod fishing from late winter through spring (February through May) when they move shallower. Barred surf perch are year-round targets in the surf zone, most active in spring and summer.
