WAWindy AI 08 July 2026Altamaha Sound is a major estuarine sound at the mouth of the Altamaha River in McIntosh County, Georgia, formed where one of the Southeast's largest undammed rivers meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the biologically rich Georgia Golden Isles coastal estuary system and supports red drum, spotted seatrout, flounder, and tarpon in an ecologically significant coastal setting. Spot Features: Altamaha Sound is a large estuarine sound at the mouth of the Altamaha River in McIntosh County, Georgia, where one of the largest blackwater rivers on the East Coast meets the Atlantic. The sound features extensive tidal marsh, oyster reefs, deep channels, and protected backwaters. Red drum and seatrout are targeted on the flats and in the tidal creeks, flounder are taken in the channels in fall, tarpon are pursued with live bait in the open sound in summer. Seasonality: Red drum are the primary sport fish target in Altamaha Sound year-round, with the best action in fall from September through November. Spotted seatrout follow a warm-season pattern, most active from spring through fall. Flounder are a fall-run species, peaking from October through December. Tarpon migrate along the Georgia coast in late spring and summer.
