The Harpswell peninsula and its surrounding waters are recognized as one of the finest striped bass fisheries on the Maine coast, particularly in fall when large fish congregate on the abundant mackerel. Spot Features: Merriconeag Sound is a navigable sound in Cumberland County, Maine, between Harpswell Neck and Great Island/Orr's Island, featuring the tidal currents, rocky ledges, and kelp beds typical of productive mid-coast Maine marine habitat. Striped bass are targeted near the rocky ledges and current edges with live mackerel, eels, and swimming plugs, mackerel in schools with small diamond jigs, bluefish with metal jigs and poppers. Seasonality: Striped bass are the primary target in Merriconeag Sound and the mid-coast Maine area in spring (May-June) and fall (September-October) during their coastal migrations. Atlantic mackerel are abundant in this area from late spring through summer (May-August), attracting stripers and bluefish. Bluefish follow through summer and fall.
