Aldeburgh Yacht Club, situated on the Suffolk coast, is a large and thriving club catering for all aspects of sailing. Located between the sea and the River Alde one mile south of the town of Aldeburgh the Club is able to organise racing on the river and, for dinghy open meetings and certain other events, on the sea. Founded in 1897, the Club now benefits from some 1,800 members and has a large modern purpose-built clubhouse constructed in 1992 and extended in 1996. The Club has an active social programme and new members are welcomed. Juniors are particularly encouraged with tuition available for both learning to sail and learning to race.
The BCYC fulfils its aims by providing a congenial environment for owners and other classic yacht enthusiasts to share experiences and enjoy each other's company, thus developing close, personal relationships between people involved with these beautiful boats. It creates opportunities for cruising in company, organises fair and exciting racing and promotes efficient development of the yachts. It also runs a lively programme of social events. The membership of the BCYC now consists of more than 80 beautiful Classic yachts. Our members are active in both cruising and racing.
Thorpeness village was built in the 1910s as a private holiday village and retains a wonderful sense of being slightly out of kilter with the world! The Meare is a huge, shallow, boating area with islands (themed around Peter Pan) that you can clamber on to and pretend to be a pirate! Head down to the Meare for a traditional holiday experience, taking out a rowing boat, kayak, punt or sailboat to explore over 40 acres of water and enjoy being on the water as long as you like! Once you’ve navigated past the crocodiles to Pirate’s Island and the Fort (J M Barrie was involved in creating the Meare), head back inland and walk round the village itself.
