The common wolf fish is a tough freshwater predator found in rivers, lakes, swamps, and floodplains across South America. An ambush hunter, it hides in dense vegetation and attacks with explosive speed using sharp, conical teeth. Extremely tolerant of low oxygen and poor water quality, it can survive droughts by burrowing into mud. Active mostly at dawn and night, it delivers brutal strikes on lures and live bait. Smaller individuals are sometimes used as live or cut bait for large catfish and river predators.
