Cape Lookout is a remote barrier island at the southern end of the Outer Banks in Carteret County, North Carolina, famous for its accessible lighthouse and spectacular fishing for red drum, king mackerel, cobia, and wahoo in the productive offshore shoals and inshore waters of Cape Lookout National Seashore. Spot Features: Cape Lookout is the southern tip of the Outer Banks barrier island chain in Carteret County, North Carolina, within Cape Lookout National Seashore, featuring the famous Cape Lookout Shoals that concentrate fish and the accessible surf and backcountry fishing of this remote barrier island setting. Seasonality: Red drum are the primary inshore target at Cape Lookout on the Outer Banks in fall (September-November) when large bull reds school in the Cape Lookout Shoals. King mackerel and cobia are warm-season species from spring through fall. Wahoo are encountered offshore in fall and winter.

There are less biting flies in the spring. Later in summer, as long as the wind comes over the ocean the flies will not be as much of a problem. So summer and spring are the best seasons for this area. Speaking about the place itself, you could camp there on the beach. There are no amenities (restaurants or hotels), so bring food and water with you and take all your trash out. Also be prepared for weather changes. Site can only be reached by ferry or boat.
