Spot Features: Blue Mesa Reservoir is Colorado's largest body of water at 9,000 acres on the Gunnison River in Gunnison County, within the Curecanti National Recreation Area. Kokanee are targeted by trolling small spinners and Wedding Ring rigs at varying depths, rainbow and brown trout by trolling and standard spinning techniques near the Gunnison River inlet and along the canyon walls. Multiple boat ramps and campgrounds provide excellent access. Seasonality: Kokanee salmon are the marquee species at Blue Mesa Reservoir, most actively targeted in spring and early summer before their pre-spawn period in late summer and fall. Rainbow trout are stocked and provide good fishing from spring through fall. Brown trout are a year-round resident of the cold, clear Gunnison River arm of the reservoir.
