Spot Features: Pyramid Lake is a large, deep terminal lake in the Nevada desert, lying in a bowl of volcanic ridges and tufa formations north of Reno. It has no outlet and is fed entirely by the Truckee River, giving it an alkaline character that is ideal for Lahontan cutthroat trout. The lake is fished entirely from the bank using casting platforms called stepladders set in the shallows, fly fishing with large streamers and dry flies or bait fishing with crawlers and PowerBait are the primary methods. No state Nevada fishing license is required, a Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe fishing permit is mandatory. Seasonality: Lahontan cutthroat trout are the centerpiece of the Pyramid Lake fishery, with the tribal fishing season running from October 1 through June 30. The fishing is best in fall when the season opens and again in spring as the season winds down and fish are active in cooler water.
