Masonboro Island State Natural Area on the south side of the inlet is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the NC coast. Seasonality: Red drum and flounder are the primary inshore targets at Masonboro Inlet in New Hanover County, North Carolina, year-round, with red drum best in fall and flounder most abundant from September through December. Speckled trout (spotted seatrout) are best in spring and fall. Pompano and whiting are late spring surf fish.
