Maroon Lake is arguably the most photographed natural landscape in Colorado, sitting at the base of the iconic Maroon Bells (Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak) in the White River National Forest near Aspen. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, it supports rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout in cold, clear water -- creating one of the most scenically spectacular fishing locations in the Rocky Mountain West. Spot Features: Maroon Lake is a high-altitude lake in Pitkin County, Colorado, at the base of the famous Maroon Bells peaks in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, accessible by shuttle bus from Aspen. Rainbow, brook, brown, and cutthroat trout respond to small spinners, flies, and bait. Heavy visitor traffic requires parking by shuttle in summer, fishing is permitted throughout the season. Seasonality: Rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout are the primary year-round sport fish at Maroon Lake, most active from ice-out in late summer (July) through early fall (September-October) in this high-elevation Elk Mountains wilderness lake. The lake is famous primarily for its iconic views of the Maroon Bells peaks.
