It is distinguished as one of the best walleye and saugeye fisheries in the CPW Front Range system, and its boat ramp and trailer access make it one of the more accessible larger water bodies in the area for trailered boats. All bass are catch-and-release only per park regulations. Spot Features: Blue Heron Reservoir is the largest water body in St. Vrain State Park, located near Longmont at I-25 and Highway 119. It offers a full boat ramp, trailer parking, and restrooms. Walleye and saugeye are targeted by trolling or drifting jig rigs and crankbaits along the bottom and structure edges, crappie are taken on small jigs near submerged cover. All largemouth and smallmouth bass caught must be returned immediately. Youth 15 and under fish for free, all other anglers require a Colorado fishing license. Seasonality: Walleye and saugeye are the marquee species at Blue Heron Reservoir, best targeted in spring during spawning when fish are most active in shallower water, and again in fall. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are available year-round but must be released immediately per St. Vrain State Park regulations. Channel catfish feed actively through the warmer months from late spring through fall. Crappie and redear sunfish round out the fishery in spring and summer.
