Lake Minnetonka is a 14,000-plus-acre iconic lake in Hennepin County, Minnesota, the largest lake in the Twin Cities metro and one of the most famous multi-species fishing lakes in the Midwest. The Minnesota DNR has monitored its fish populations since 1949 and actively manages walleye and muskellunge through alternate-year stocking. It is the source of Minnehaha Creek and a landmark of Twin Cities outdoor recreation. Spot Features: Lake Minnetonka is a 14,000-plus-acre multi-basin lake in the western Twin Cities metro, with interconnected bays, islands, and basins creating diverse habitat for its rich species assemblage. Walleye are targeted with jig-and-minnow rigs and trolled crankbaits in the 10-20 foot depth range, muskie anglers cast large swimbaits, bucktails, and glide baits along weed transitions and points. The lake is heavily used recreationally, but its size and complexity keep fish populations strong. A boat is essential to access the productive offshore areas. Seasonality: Walleye fishing at Lake Minnetonka peaks in spring during the spawning period and again in fall when fish feed aggressively, summer midday fishing slows as fish move deeper. Muskellunge are most actively targeted from late spring through fall, with the best action in evening and at night around weed edges. Largemouth bass peak in spring during spawning and are active through summer. Smallmouth bass are most aggressive in late spring and summer near rocky points. Sunfish and crappie provide consistent panfish action year-round.
