About this spot

Fishing info

  • Experience

The site provides diverse facilities and angling opportunities with various fish species such as largemouth bass, common carp, and rainbow trout. The well-maintained infrastructure and family-friendly amenities enhance the fishing experience. However, the spot might experience crowded conditions, placing pressure on fish populations, and increasing competition. Additionally, underwater trash deterring equipment is a concern.

  • Tips

Visitors should practice patience due to fluctuating conditions and be mindful of raccoons. Arriving during less busy periods or utilizing boats may grant access to less pressured areas, improving catch rates. Be prepared for low catch yield due to pressure on fish populations, and be aware of potential water contamination affecting fish health. Different tactics and baits could be beneficial in improving success rates.

  • Fishing seasons

The location offers a generally stable fishing environment due to moderate temperature variation throughout the year, keeping conditions mild for fishing. Low precipitation for most of the year makes it ideal for outings, although fishing in deeper waters during September might be necessary due to higher temperatures. Lake Merced is a scenic freshwater lake in the southwestern corner of San Francisco, adjacent to the Olympic Club golf course and the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most popular urban fishing destinations in San Francisco, receiving regular CDFW rainbow trout and brown trout stockings alongside a resident largemouth bass population, providing accessible fishing for city residents in a surprisingly natural setting just minutes from downtown. Spot Features: Lake Merced is a natural coastal lake in San Francisco adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, managed by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and CDFW. Rainbow and brown trout respond to small spinners, flies, and Power Bait along the lake perimeter, largemouth bass with soft plastics and topwaters along the vegetated margins. Shore fishing from the accessible lake perimeter trail is the primary access method, small non-motorized boats are permitted. Seasonality: Rainbow trout and brown trout are stocked at Lake Merced in the cooler months providing good fishing from fall through spring. Largemouth bass are active year-round in the mild San Francisco climate. The lake's foggy, cool microclimate allows trout fishing more months than most Bay Area lakes.
