    Lake Mendota is a 9,842-acre glacial lake in Madison, Wisconsin, the centerpiece of the famous Madison Chain of Lakes and one of the most extensively studied lakes in the world due to its proximity to the University of Wisconsin's Limnological Laboratory. It supports excellent walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and northern pike in a lake that has been at the forefront of freshwater ecology research for over a century. Spot Features: Lake Mendota is a 9,842-acre natural glacial lake in Dane County, Wisconsin, the largest of the Madison Chain of Lakes and the largest lake entirely within Dane County. It features diverse habitat of weed beds, rocky areas, open water, and an 83-foot maximum depth. Walleye are targeted by trolling crankbaits and jig-and-minnow rigs, smallmouth bass along the rocky shoreline, largemouth in the vegetated coves, pike in the weed beds. Seasonality: Walleye are the primary sport fish at Lake Mendota, with peak fishing in spring during the spawning period and in fall. Largemouth bass peak in spring during spawning. Smallmouth bass are most aggressive in late spring and summer in rocky areas. Northern pike are most aggressive in spring and fall. Lake Mendota is one of the most studied lakes in the world due to its proximity to the University of Wisconsin.
