The Middle Channel of the Saint Clair River is one of the river's principal navigation channels between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair, flowing between Michigan and Ontario with powerful river currents that create excellent habitat for walleye, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. The Saint Clair River is one of the most productive and diverse sport fishing waterways in the Great Lakes region. Spot Features: The Middle Channel of the Saint Clair River is one of three main channels dividing the islands between Michigan and Ontario, with strong tidal-like currents that concentrate walleye and smallmouth bass. Walleye are targeted by trolling or drifting jigs in the current, smallmouth bass by casting jerkbaits and crankbaits along the current seams and rocky bottom, largemouth bass in the slower backwater areas adjacent to the channel. A boat is essential for navigating the currents. Seasonality: Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are active in the Middle Channel of the Saint Clair River from spring through fall, with smallmouth most aggressive in summer in the faster current sections. Walleye fishing peaks in spring and fall in the main channel. Yellow perch are most catchable in fall and through the ice in Michigan winters. The river's strong current creates distinctive fishing challenges and opportunities.
