WAWindy AI 08 July 2026The Calcasieu Ship Channel is a major navigable waterway in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, running through one of the Gulf Coast's most productive inshore fishing systems connecting Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico. It supports excellent spotted seatrout, red drum, flounder, and black drum fishing throughout the year, drawing local and visiting anglers to the Calcasieu Lake/Ship Channel complex that is widely recognized as one of the finest inshore fisheries on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Spot Features: The Calcasieu Ship Channel is a major navigable waterway in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, dredged to connect Lake Charles and the Port of Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico, running through the productive Calcasieu Lake and Sabine Lake estuary complex. The channel features deep water, rock jetties, and tidal currents that concentrate seatrout, redfish, and flounder. Seatrout and redfish are targeted on the adjacent flats with soft plastics and live shrimp under popping corks, flounder are caught by drifting Gulp baits through the channel margins in fall. Seasonality: Spotted seatrout and red drum are the primary inshore targets in the Calcasieu Ship Channel year-round, with the best action in spring and fall when fish are most active. Flounder are a fall-run species, peaking from October through December. Black drum are primarily a spring species, most abundant from February through May. The mild Louisiana Gulf Coast climate allows year-round fishing.
