The Carmel River is a scenic coastal California stream flowing through the Carmel Valley in Monterey County to Carmel Bay, home to one of California's southernmost remaining Southern steelhead runs. The river's combination of stunning natural beauty -- from the redwood forest upper valley to the lagoon at the Pacific -- and the rare opportunity to see and fish for these federally threatened steelhead makes it one of the most ecologically and aesthetically significant fishing destinations on the California coast. Spot Features: The Carmel River flows through the Carmel Valley from the Santa Lucia Mountains to the Pacific Ocean near Carmel-by-the-Sea in Monterey County. It supports a small but ecologically significant steelhead run in its lower tidal sections and resident rainbow trout in the upper river. All steelhead in the Central California Coast DPS must be released immediately, the primary attraction for many anglers is the sight-fishing experience of spotting steelhead in the clear Carmel River pools. Seasonality: Southern steelhead (Central California Coast DPS, federally threatened) enter the Carmel River from the Pacific in fall and hold through late winter and spring (November through March in most years). Resident rainbow trout are present year-round in the upper river above the tidal section. Steelhead fishing is catch-and-release only throughout California's Central Coast DPS waters -- verify current regulations.
