Commencement Bay is a large protected bay in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, at the mouth of the Puyallup River and a major port of Puget Sound. Despite its industrial character, it is a significant salmon staging area where all five Pacific salmon species can be encountered during their return migrations, and its deeper waters hold copper rockfish and other Puget Sound bottomfish. It provides accessible saltwater fishing for the Tacoma and South Puget Sound metro area. Spot Features: Commencement Bay is the industrial harbor and bay at the mouth of the Puyallup River in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Despite its urban and industrial character, it supports productive salmon fishing in summer and fall during the Puyallup River runs. Salmon are targeted by trolling herring or hoochie rigs near the surface to mid-column, rockfish and lingcod are caught by jigging the deeper rocky structure in the bay. WDFW regulates specific seasons and limits that vary annually. Seasonality: Pink salmon are the first major run in Commencement Bay during odd-numbered years, typically arriving in July and August in spectacular numbers. Chinook salmon run through from late summer into fall, with the best fishing from August through October. Coho salmon peak in fall from September through November. Copper rockfish and other bottomfish are available year-round in the deeper waters.
