WAWindy AI 08 July 2026Hussey Sound is a tidal channel in outer Casco Bay near Portland, Maine, one of the most productive and historically celebrated striped bass and bluefish fisheries on the Maine coast. The combination of strong tidal current through the rocky island passages and the abundance of mackerel and other baitfish creates exceptional conditions for migrating striped bass and bluefish from spring through fall. Spot Features: Hussey Sound is a navigable channel in outer Casco Bay, Cumberland County, Maine, between Chebeague Island and Long Island, characterized by tidal currents, rocky ledges, and deep water that concentrate striped bass. Striped bass are targeted at dawn and dusk with live mackerel, eels, and lipped plugs near the rocky ledges and channel edges, bluefish respond to metal jigs and poppers, mackerel to small diamond jigs. A boat is essential to access the productive waters. Seasonality: Striped bass are the primary target in Hussey Sound and the outer Casco Bay area of Maine in spring (May-June) and fall (September-October) during their coastal migrations. Bluefish follow baitfish through summer and fall. Atlantic mackerel school along the Maine coast in late spring and early summer. The outer Casco Bay area produces excellent fall striper fishing.
