WAWindy AI 08 July 2026The Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan provides access to the Great Lakes multi-species fishery for Hoosier anglers, where Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, and lake trout can all be caught within reach of the densely populated Chicago metro area. The Lake Michigan Indiana shoreline includes Indiana Dunes National Park and state recreation areas that provide public beach and pier fishing access. Spot Features: The Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan in Porter and LaPorte counties features a sandy beach, pier structures, and harbor areas at Portage, Michigan City, and Whiting that concentrate staging salmon and steelhead. Chinook and coho are targeted by trolling offshore or casting from the piers and beaches during their migrations, steelhead are caught from the breakwalls and beach using jig-and-float setups and spawn sacs in fall and spring. The Indiana Dunes National Park provides a scenic backdrop for beach fishing. Seasonality: Chinook salmon are the primary fall target at the Lake Michigan Indiana shoreline, staging near the mouth of the Little Calumet River and Trail Creek from August through October. Coho salmon follow from September through November. Steelhead (rainbow trout) are accessible from the beach and piers from fall through spring (October through April). Lake trout are available year-round by trolling offshore.
