The Mattole River is a remote river flowing through the Lost Coast wilderness of Humboldt and Mendocino counties to the Pacific Ocean, supporting one of the few remaining wild coho salmon runs in California alongside Chinook salmon and steelhead. The Mattole watershed is a stronghold for wild salmonids in a dramatically remote landscape that retains much of its historical biological character despite significant conservation challenges. Spot Features: The Mattole River flows through Humboldt and Mendocino counties in California's remote King Range/Lost Coast to the Pacific Ocean near Petrolia. It is one of the most ecologically significant rivers in California, supporting wild coho salmon (threatened), Chinook salmon, and steelhead in one of the most remote and undeveloped river systems in the state. Standard coastal California stream techniques for steelhead and salmon apply, fishing is often limited or restricted for coho -- always check current CDFW regulations. Seasonality: Steelhead are the primary seasonal target in the Mattole River, entering from the Pacific in fall and holding through early spring (October through March). Coho salmon run in fall (September-November) and are a species of conservation concern, harvest may be restricted or prohibited -- verify current CDFW regulations. Chinook salmon run from summer through fall (July-October). The Mattole is one of the few rivers in California's Lost Coast region with a remaining wild coho salmon run.
