Seminole Bypass Canal is a quiet, paddle-friendly urban fishery in Pinellas County, Florida. The canal's freshwater upper section transitions to a brackish environment via a weir feeding Long Bayou and ultimately Boca Ciega Bay, creating an unusual freshwater-to-saltwater interface within a single short waterway. Because combustion motors are banned, it attracts anglers seeking a peaceful alternative to busier Tampa Bay waterways. Spot Features: This 7.1-mile canal in Pinellas County runs just east of Lake Seminole, dropping over a weir into the tidal brackish reach of Long Bayou before connecting to Boca Ciega Bay. Internal combustion engines are prohibited, so the canal is worked best by kayak, canoe, or electric-motor skiff. The weir transition zone is a prime holding spot for mixed-species action. Soft plastics or topwaters cast tight to overhanging vegetation and canal walls are consistently effective. Seasonality: Largemouth bass are present year-round, with the best action in the cooler months from November through March when fish are most active in shallow canal water. Common snook follow tidal and seasonal rhythms, congregating at the freshwater-to-brackish transition near the downstream weir most actively in spring and fall. Bluegill and Mayan cichlid offer reliable action year-round, while sheepshead concentrate around hard structure in winter and early spring.
