It opens onto Sitka Sound and sits within some of the most productive coastal fishing waters in the state, where all five Pacific salmon species, trophy Pacific halibut, lingcod, and multiple rockfish species are regularly encountered. Old-growth Sitka spruce forest rises steeply from the shoreline, giving the fishery a remote character despite its proximity to town. Spot Features: Silver Bay is a deep fjord-like inlet with steep underwater walls and kelp beds that hold rockfish and lingcod at mid-depth, while halibut occupy sandy and gravel bottom at greater depths. Salmon are most effectively targeted by trolling herring or flasher-and-spoon rigs near the surface to mid-column. Halibut anglers typically anchor or drift with large herring or octopus baits on the bottom. A boat is essential, access from Sitka by skiff or charter is straightforward. Seasonality: King (Chinook) salmon are the first major target, entering Silver Bay and adjacent Sitka Sound waters from late spring through early summer. Pink salmon arrive in force in July and August, with especially strong runs in even-numbered years. Coho salmon build through August and peak into October. Pacific halibut are available from late winter through early winter. Lingcod fishing opens in mid-May and runs through fall, while rockfish can be encountered year-round at depth.
