The Snake River in Summit County, Colorado, is a high-altitude freestone tributary of Dillon Reservoir running through the Keystone resort corridor above 9,000 feet. It is the namesake home water of the Snake River cutthroat trout, a native Colorado subspecies, alongside wild and stocked brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Its scenic mountain setting and diverse trout assemblage draw fly anglers from across the Front Range. Spot Features: The Snake River in Summit County is a small freestone mountain stream flowing through the Keystone Resort corridor before entering Dillon Reservoir near Highway 6. It features pocket water, riffles, and undercut banks sheltering wild cutthroat, large stocked rainbow trout, and brown and brook trout. The inlet arm at Dillon Reservoir is particularly productive for larger fish. Dry-fly fishing with small elk hair caddis or parachute adams, and nymph rigs with a bead-head dropper, are the standard approaches. Seasonality: Brown trout and brook trout are most active in spring and fall when water temperatures are coolest in this high-elevation Summit County stream. Snake River cutthroat trout, the native subspecies for which this river is named, spawn in spring (April through May) and feed aggressively through the warmer months. Summer fishing is productive during morning and evening. The river ices over in deep winter, limiting bank fishing through early spring snowmelt.
