Stirrup Iron Creek is a Piedmont waterway in Wake County, North Carolina, within the greater Neuse River watershed. It supports a typical central Carolina warmwater assemblage including largemouth bass, black and white crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. The creek is representative of the accessible lowland fishing opportunities throughout the Research Triangle region of North Carolina. Spot Features: Stirrup Iron Creek is a Piedmont stream in Wake County, North Carolina, draining into the Neuse River system. Its slower lower reaches and backwater areas hold crappie around woody debris and submerged brush piles, while largemouth bass patrol vegetation edges and undercut banks. Small jigs and minnows on a light spinning outfit are the most versatile approach for mixed-bag creek fishing. Shore access is generally feasible along road crossings and creek banks. Seasonality: Largemouth bass are most active in spring through early summer and again in fall as water temperatures move through the bass's optimal feeding range. Black crappie and white crappie move into shallower water in spring to spawn, typically from March through May, making this the peak season for slab crappie. Bluegill are catchable year-round but most accessible during their late-spring spawn. Channel catfish feed actively through the warmer months from late spring into early fall.
