WAWindy AI 08 July 2026The Youngs River is a scenic coastal river in Clatsop County, Oregon, near Astoria, supporting significant runs of Chinook salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead as a tributary of the Columbia River estuary system. Like many lower Columbia coastal tributaries, it offers exceptional fall salmon and winter steelhead fishing in a heavily forested and lightly populated coastal setting that retains much of the wild character of the Oregon Coast Range. Spot Features: The Youngs River is a coastal Oregon river draining into Youngs Bay near Astoria, Clatsop County, with the pools, riffles, and tidal sections typical of lower Columbia tributaries. Chinook and coho salmon are targeted by drifting roe, back-trolling plugs, and casting spinners in the deeper pools and runs, steelhead are caught with drift rigs, float-and-jig presentations, and fly fishing. Check ODFW for current salmon and steelhead season regulations and any wild fish release requirements. Seasonality: Chinook salmon are the primary fall target in the Youngs River, entering from September through November as fish migrate upstream toward spawning grounds. Coho salmon follow in October and December. Steelhead enter the river in fall and hold through winter and early spring (October through March). The Youngs River is part of the lower Columbia coastal river system managed annually by ODFW.
