Cane Bay is a scenic bay on the northern coast of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, famous primarily as a world-class scuba diving destination but equally rewarding for anglers. The bay sits adjacent to a dramatic underwater wall that drops hundreds of feet into open Caribbean water, creating a proximity of deep-water pelagic habitat and shallow coral reef structure that supports a diverse fishing environment accessible to small-boat anglers and shore fishermen. Spot Features: Cane Bay on the north shore of St. Croix is remarkable for having one of the most accessible wall dives and fishing drop-offs in the Caribbean, with the ocean floor plunging steeply just a few hundred yards from shore. The proximity of deep water means pelagic species like king mackerel and wahoo can be reached by small boat very close to land. Reef fish, including yellowtail snapper and mutton snapper, are caught over the coral reef structure in shallower water using live or cut bait on light tackle. Seasonality: Yellowtail snapper and mutton snapper are resident species available year-round at Cane Bay, with the best action on evening and night tides when they feed aggressively. Tarpon pass through on seasonal migrations, with the best opportunities in spring and early summer as large fish move through Caribbean waters. King mackerel and wahoo are most commonly encountered in fall through spring when cooler water and baitfish concentrations bring pelagic species close to the drop-off.
