Surf Smelt school along Pacific coasts of North America, spawning on sandy beaches. Small and silvery, they feed on plankton and small invertebrates. Once harvested in huge runs, they remain important forage fish for salmon and seabirds. Though modest in size, they are popular for netting and light-tackle fishing.
