WAWindy AI 08 July 2026Blue Mesa Reservoir is Colorado's largest body of water at 9,000 acres on the Gunnison River in Gunnison County, world-famous for its outstanding kokanee salmon fishing alongside rainbow trout and brown trout. Created by Blue Mesa Dam on the Gunnison River, it sits within Curecanti National Recreation Area and offers spectacular high-altitude fishing in one of Colorado's most dramatic canyon landscapes. Spot Features: Blue Mesa Reservoir is Colorado's largest body of water at 9,000 acres on the Gunnison River in Gunnison County, within the Curecanti National Recreation Area. Kokanee are targeted by trolling small spinners and Wedding Ring rigs at varying depths, rainbow and brown trout by trolling and standard spinning techniques near the Gunnison River inlet and along the canyon walls. Multiple boat ramps and campgrounds provide excellent access. Seasonality: Kokanee salmon are the marquee species at Blue Mesa Reservoir, most actively targeted in spring and early summer before their pre-spawn period in late summer and fall. Rainbow trout are stocked and provide good fishing from spring through fall. Brown trout are a year-round resident of the cold, clear Gunnison River arm of the reservoir.
