Northern pike are targeted with large swimbaits and live bait near the extensive weed beds, walleye by trolling crankbaits and jig-and-minnow rigs, bluegill and crappie with small jigs around submerged structure, ice fishing for all species in winter. Seasonality: Northern pike are the primary sport fish at Houghton Lake, most aggressive in spring and fall when cooler water energizes them, they can be caught through the ice in Michigan winters. Bluegill are active through the warmer months with peak action in late spring during their spawn. Walleye fishing peaks in spring during the spawning run and in fall. Black crappie are excellent in spring during the spawn.
