WAWindy AI 08 July 2026Agua Hedionda Lagoon is a natural tidal lagoon in Carlsbad, San Diego County, California, managed in part by CDFW as an ecological reserve. It is a productive southern California fishing destination where the tidal exchange brings spotted sand bass, barred sand bass, kelp bass, California halibut, corbina, and other coastal species into the lagoon system. Spot Features: Agua Hedionda Lagoon is a tidal lagoon adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad, San Diego County, connected to the ocean through an inlet allowing marine species in on tidal flows. The lagoon features sandy flats, tidal channels, and some rocky structure. Sand bass and corbina are targeted with light spinning tackle and live bait or soft plastics on the sandy bottom, halibut are taken by drifting live anchovies or squid along the bottom. Seasonality: Spotted sand bass, barred sand bass, and kelp bass are resident species at Agua Hedionda Lagoon year-round, with the best fishing in the warmer months from spring through fall. White croaker (tomcod) and California halibut move through the lagoon on tidal flows, most abundant in summer and early fall. Corbina are present in the sandy-bottom shallows in summer.
