The bay is central to the identity of the Jersey Shore fishing community. Spot Features: Barnegat Bay is a 42-mile-long back bay in Ocean County, New Jersey, between the mainland and the Barnegat Peninsula (Long Beach Island), featuring diverse habitat of grass flats, channels, and inlet areas. Striped bass in the channels with eels and plugs, fluke by drifting Gulp baits, weakfish with small jigs and live shrimp, bluefish at the bay entrances. Seasonality: Striped bass are the primary year-round target in Barnegat Bay, with the best action in fall (September-October) when large fish concentrate in the bay. Summer flounder are the prime summer target from June through August. Weakfish (sea trout) are encountered in spring and fall. Bluefish follow baitfish through summer and fall.
