WSD is far more than just a dragon boat club-it is truly a family. Many of us have been paddling together for over 10 seasons and the friendships that have developed are unparalleled.
To be Xtreme means not only to work hard, but to play hard. Besides the weekly practices, there are also team events. There are meetings, dinners, outings and our annual team barbecue. It's because we combine the best of teamwork, competitiveness and fun that Xtreme NY has grown every year. Since 1996, we have grown from a handful of people to over 60 members. We are always happy to open our arms to anyone willing to make the commitment to our organization. And in return, that person doesn't just become a member of a team, that person becomes a part of the Xtreme NY family.
Through the hard work of its members and leadership, M.A.D. has established itself as one of the top dragon boat teams in America. The unique experience of dragon boat and M.A.D in particular captured the attention of many local and international media outlets such as Sing Tao, The World Journal, Newsday, etc. We have also made appearances on television with features in Nickelodeon’s Splash TV and most recently, TLC’s Cake Boss. With a strong foundation to build upon and a bright future ahead of us, we look forward to continued success in promoting the sport of dragon boat and the spirit of M.A.D.

What is Dragonboat? Dragon Boat racing combines everything you never thought could go together, in perfect harmony. It combines the tradition of ancient Chinese culture with the modern world of competitive sports. Dragon boat racing dates back 2,500 years but has recently been highlighted in SI, the WSJ and the NYTimes as one of the fastest growing water sports in the world with hundreds of international teams competing in over 60 countries. Paddlers require grace, flexibility and synchronicity while exhibiting strength, power and endurance. Twenty paddlers race in a slim, 40-ft boat in perfect beat to a drummer that sits on the bow as the coxswain steers from the back. Each stroke is composed of an explosion of energy as the boat tears through the water, balanced by a relaxed return as the paddle cuts through the air. Crews propel the 800lb boats for distances of 250m, 500m, 1000m or more.
