The bay's extraordinary marine upwelling creates exceptional fishing conditions that have made it a legendary California fishing destination. Spot Features: Monterey Bay is a large crescent-shaped bay in Monterey County, California, one of the most biologically productive marine environments on the Pacific Coast. Yellowtail are targeted by trolling and casting to schooling fish near the surface, rockfish by jigging over rocky structure and in kelp beds, lingcod with large swimbaits near the bottom, halibut by drifting live anchovies. Seasonality: Yellowtail (California yellowtail) are the primary nearshore target in Monterey Bay from late spring through fall (May-November) when baitfish concentrations attract them. Rockfish are year-round residents of the deep-water kelp and rocky structure, most accessible from spring through fall. Lingcod are most available in spring and fall. Pacific halibut can be encountered in summer and fall.
