The lake's clear water, vast size, and excellent walleye and smallmouth bass populations make it a bucket-list destination for Nebraska anglers and a landmark of the western Nebraska outdoor recreation experience. Spot Features: Lake McConaughy is a 35,700-acre reservoir on the North Platte River in Keith County, Nebraska, the largest reservoir in Nebraska, featuring diverse habitat of sandy beaches, rocky points, and open water. Walleye by trolling crankbaits and crawler harnesses over the shoals, smallmouth bass along the rocky points with crankbaits, hybrid striped bass by trolling or targeting schooling fish in open water. Multiple boat ramps and campgrounds provide excellent access. Seasonality: Walleye are the primary sport fish at Lake McConaughy, with peak fishing in spring during the spawning period and in fall when fish feed aggressively. Smallmouth bass are most aggressive in the rocky, clear sections in late spring and summer. Hybrid striped bass school in open water through summer and fall.
