The rocky shoreline, warm tropical water, and proximity to offshore depths create habitat for giant trevally, bluefin trevally, and great barracuda. Shore casting with flashy lures and live bait from the rocky lava shoreline is the primary technique, the rugged terrain requires careful footing. Seasonality: Giant trevally and bluefin trevally are year-round residents of Pohoiki Bay, most actively feeding at dawn, dusk, and night near the rocky lava shoreline. Great barracuda are year-round predators in the bay and adjacent clear water. The dramatic lava landscape of the Puna district makes this one of the most unique fishing settings in Hawaii.
