The bay's protected character and park facilities make it one of the more accessible small-boat and shore-fishing locations on the Oregon coast. Spot Features: Sunset Bay is a sheltered cove within Sunset Bay State Park in Coos County, southern Oregon, with rocky reef structure, kelp beds, and protected water suitable for small-boat and shore fishing. Rockfish are targeted with jigs and live bait near the reef structure, lingcod with large swimbaits and jigs in spring, salmon by trolling near the bay entrance and in the adjacent ocean waters. Seasonality: Rockfish are year-round residents of Sunset Bay, most actively targeted in spring and summer (March through August). Lingcod are most available in spring during their spawning period (February through May) and again in fall. Coho salmon can be encountered in late summer and fall. Chinook salmon stage near the bay from summer through fall.
