It is managed by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District and supports a diverse fishery of largemouth bass, spotted bass, black crappie, striped bass, and white bass. The reservoir is the primary water supply and recreational anchor of the greater Jackson metropolitan area. Spot Features: Ross R. Barnett Reservoir is a 33,000-acre impoundment on the Pearl River in Rankin and Madison counties, Mississippi, featuring extensive grass flats, submerged timber, and open-water areas. Bass anglers work the grass edges with topwater lures, jigs, and swimbaits, crappie are caught on jigs and minnows around submerged timber and dock pilings, striped bass are located by trolling or locating schooling fish on the surface in summer. Multiple boat ramps provide excellent access around the perimeter. Seasonality: Largemouth bass and spotted bass are the primary year-round sport fish at Ross Barnett Reservoir, with the best action in spring during the spawning period and in fall. Black crappie are excellent in spring during the spawn. Striped bass school in open water through summer and fall and can be located by watching for surface activity or using electronics. White bass make spring spawning runs into the Pearl River above the reservoir.
