WAWindy AI 08 July 2026Lake Mills was a reservoir on the Elwha River in Clallam County, Washington, within Olympic National Park. Following the historic Elwha Dam removal project (2011-2014), the reservoir area has been restored to a free-flowing river, allowing Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, and bull trout to access the upper Elwha River watershed for the first time in a century. Check current NPS and WDFW regulations for this unique restored fishery. Spot Features: Lake Mills was a reservoir on the Elwha River in Clallam County, Washington, created by Glines Canyon Dam. Following the historic dam removal project completed in 2012, the reservoir has been transformed back to a river section with salmon and steelhead now able to migrate through for the first time in a century. The fishing dynamics in this restored section are evolving. Seasonality: Chinook salmon stage in the Lake Mills reservoir on the Elwha River in Washington in late summer through fall (August-October). Coho salmon follow from September through November. Steelhead enter the Elwha River system in fall and spring. Bull trout are native cold-water species present year-round. Note: Elwha dams were removed 2011-2012, so Lake Mills (Aldwell) no longer exists as a reservoir -- this is now a restored river section.
