The Kenai River is arguably the most famous salmon fishing river in the world, a 82-mile Alaska peninsula river that produces world-record Chinook (king) salmon alongside massive sockeye, coho, and pink salmon runs, plus exceptional rainbow trout fishing in the upper river. The combination of extraordinary fish size, quantity, and diversity in a river accessible from the Kenai Peninsula highway system makes it Alaska's most visited and productive sport fishing destination. Spot Features: The Kenai River is one of the most famous and heavily fished salmon rivers in the world, flowing 82 miles from Kenai Lake through the Kenai Peninsula to Cook Inlet. It produces the largest Chinook salmon in the world, with fish exceeding 90 pounds on record. Chinook salmon are targeted by back-trolling plugs and drifting roe in the river's powerful current, sockeye salmon with spinners and dip-nets during the massive July run. Access varies by section, float fishing and guide services are common. Seasonality: Chinook salmon (king salmon) are the primary target in the Kenai River, with the most celebrated and heavily fished run in late May through July (first run) and again in July-August (second run). Sockeye salmon run from June through August in massive numbers. Coho salmon run from August through October. Steelhead enter in fall and spring. Rainbow trout are year-round residents of the upper river.
