Blacks Reef in Mahia is a fairly exposed reef break that is often working and works all around the year. Works best in offshore winds from the north northeast. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the optimum swell angle is from the south southeast. Both left and right reef breaks. Best around mid tide when the tide is rising. A popular wave that can get growded. Watch out for rocks.
The best time of year for surfing Blacks Reef with consistent clean waves (rideable swell with light / offshore winds) is during Spring and most often the month of October. Clean surfable waves are typically found 26% of the time in October while 40% of the time it tends to be blown out. For the remaining 34% of the time it is considered too small by most surfers but may still be OK for beginners and groms at times.
