The Potomac River is the historic river that defines much of the DC/Maryland/Virginia boundary, supporting one of the finest smallmouth bass fisheries in the eastern United States in its upper rocky reaches alongside largemouth bass and seasonal striped bass in its tidal lower sections. The river has undergone remarkable water quality improvement since the 1970s, and today it provides outstanding fishing within the heart of the nation's capital region. Spot Features: The Potomac River flows 383 miles from the Alleghenies to the Chesapeake Bay, with the upper river known for exceptional smallmouth bass fishing in clear, rocky water and the tidal lower river supporting striped bass. Smallmouth bass are targeted by wading and casting crankbaits, jigs, and streamer flies in the rocky riffles and pools, largemouth bass in the slower vegetated sections, striped bass with live eels and soft plastics in the tidal current below Washington DC. Seasonality: Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are the primary sport fish in the Potomac River, most active in spring during the spawning period and in fall. Striped bass are present in the tidal lower sections during fall and winter migrations. The Potomac is one of the finest smallmouth bass rivers in the eastern United States.
