Hallets Cove is a small cove in Astoria, Queens, on the East River at the Hell Gate tidal confluence, one of the most unique urban fishing locations in New York City. The powerful Hell Gate current sweeps baitfish past this stretch of water, attracting striped bass, bluefish, white perch, and American shad within easy reach of millions of New Yorkers. The restored Hallets Cove waterfront park provides accessible shore access to this productive urban fishery. Spot Features: Hallets Cove is a small cove on the Queens shore of the East River at Hallets Point, adjacent to the Hell Gate tidal strait, which produces powerful currents that concentrate baitfish and the sport fish that follow them. Striped bass are the main target, caught on live eels, bunker chunks, and swim shads in the strong tidal current, the best action is at night on the change of tide. White perch and American shad are taken on small darts and jigs in spring. Fishing from the shoreline park provides excellent access for NYC anglers without a boat. Seasonality: Striped bass enter Hallets Cove and the adjacent East River and Hell Gate area in spring from April through June and again in fall from September through November during their coastal migrations. Bluefish follow baitfish in summer and fall. White perch are a year-round resident, most catchable in spring and fall. American shad make a spring spawning run up the East River and Harlem River in April and May.
