The Straits of Mackinac is the famous channel separating the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan and connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. It is one of the iconic Great Lakes fishing locations, recognized for its diverse cold-water species assemblage including lake trout, lake whitefish, Chinook and coho salmon, and walleye. The Mackinac Bridge spans the channel, and the region draws anglers from across the Midwest for its scenic setting and world-class Great Lakes fishing. Spot Features: The Straits of Mackinac is the narrow, powerful channel connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, characterized by strong currents, cold, clear water, and significant depth changes across a relatively short distance. The currents concentrate baitfish and attract the diverse Great Lakes species assemblage that defines this fishery. Trolling with spoons, stick baits, or cut bait is the primary salmon and lake trout technique, jigging over deeper structure works for lake trout and whitefish. Both charter and private-boat fishing are common, shore access from the Mackinac Bridge area is limited. Seasonality: Lake trout are a year-round resident fishery in the Straits, with the best angling in spring and fall when fish move shallower. Chinook salmon run through the Straits primarily in late summer and fall as they migrate toward spawning tributaries. Coho salmon are present from late summer through fall. Lake whitefish are available year-round, with the best ice-fishing action in winter. Walleye fishing peaks in spring and again in fall in the currents of the Straits.
